How to Master the Format Painter in Microsoft Excel

The Format Painter tool in Microsoft Excel is a powerful time-saving feature that allows you to quickly apply formatting from one cell or range to another.
Whether you want to copy font styles, colors, borders, or other formatting elements, the Format Painter has you covered.

Steps to Use the Format Painter:

  1. Select the Source Range:
    • Click on the cell or range that contains the formatting you want to copy.
  1. Activate the Format Painter:
    • Click on the Format Painter button on the Home tab of the Ribbon. You'll notice that the cursor will change to a paintbrush.

 


  1. Select the Target Range:
    • Click and drag over the cells or range where you want to apply the formatting.
  2. Release the Format Painter:
    • Once you've selected the target range, simply click anywhere else in the worksheet to release the Format Painter.

Additional Tips:

  • Multiple Applications: You can apply the same formatting to multiple ranges by continuing to click and drag after selecting the initial target range.
  • Temporary Formatting: If you want to temporarily apply the formatting without permanently changing it, press the Esc key to cancel the operation.
